Narcolepsy Network Awards Nomination & Selection Procedure

Narcolepsy Network’s annual awards recognize those who have made significant contributions to the narcolepsy community. Awards are given at our annual conference, held in October of each year. The five awards are:

The Ruth Justus Nebus Volunteer of the Year Award

Eligibility Criteria

  • NN Member
  • Exemplary record of volunteer service to Narcolepsy Network
  • Active involvement with a chapter, committee, program, or another form of volunteer service to NN
  • Significant contribution of time, talents, and service
  • Nominations: Candidates may be nominated by a current volunteer, member, board member, or member of the medical advisory board.

Selection Criteria – nominees will be ranked based upon the following criteria:

  • Initiative – steps the volunteer has taken to improve NN’s processes or narcolepsy in general
  • Sustained commitment – an established commitment of on-going volunteer work with NN
  • Impact – demonstrated impact as a result of the volunteer’s work with NN
  • Innovation – ways in which the volunteer used innovative or exemplary approaches to complete their volunteer service.

Public Awareness Award

Eligibility Criteria

  • Individuals, projects, or businesses that have produced or caused to be published nationally, information about narcolepsy
  • Individual or company that has improved public recognition and appreciation for narcolepsy and/or those with narcolepsy.

Nominations: Candidates may be nominated by a current volunteer, member, trustee, or member of the medical advisory board.

Robert Clark, MD Clinician of the Year Award

Eligibility Criteria

  • An outstanding individual who has attained prominence in his/her career and has made at least one significant or unique contribution to treating people with narcolepsy and/or related sleep disorders.

Nominations

  • The nominee will have attained prominence in his/her professional career who will have demonstrated tangible and persistent contributions that are recognized by their peers as accomplishments in their field.
  • Contributions include, but are not limited to medical practice, psychology, sociology, counseling, mentorship, and any act that improves the quality of life for those with narcolepsy and/or related sleep disorders.
  • The nominee should have at least 10 years of distinguished service
  • The nominee may have made at least one significant or unique contribution to NN during his/her tenure within the field
    Candidates may be nominated by a current volunteer, member, trustee, or member of the medical advisory board.

Selection Criteria – nominees will be ranked based upon the following criteria:

  • Years of overall distinguished service – the award is for lifetime achievement rather than for a single contribution, no matter how monumental
  • Leadership – inspired peers and others by example
  • Past organizational achievements and awards
  • Overall impact – demonstrated impact as a result of the nominee’s contributions.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Eligibility Criteria

  • Outstanding individuals who have attained prominence in his/her career and have made at least one significant or unique contribution to narcolepsy.

Nominations

  • The nominee will have attained prominence in his/her professional career who will have demonstrated tangible and persistent contributions that are recognized by their peers as accomplishments in their field
  • Contributions include, but are not limited to, service, publications, medical practice, mentorship, research, education & training, innovative technology, and any act that improves the quality of life for those with narcolepsy
  • The nominee should have at least 10 years of distinguished service
  • The nominee may have made at least one significant or unique contribution to NN during his/her tenure within the field
  • Candidates may be nominated by a current volunteer, member, trustee, or member of the medical advisory board.

Researcher of the Year Award

Eligibility Criteria

  • Recognized Researcher in Narcolepsy
  • Exemplary record of professionalism
  • A significant contribution of time, talents, and service.

Nominations: Candidates must be nominated by NN’s medical advisory board.

Decision Process for all awards:

  • Nominations must be received by the Board of Trustees by the 1st of September
  • After all nominations are received, the Board of Trustees will review the merit of nominations and then make a recommendation to the President
  • Should more than one nomination be received for the Researcher of the Year Award, a Research Committee must be formed to choose one recipient
  • The President will announce the winner of each award to the Board of Trustees by the 1st of October
  • No award is made if no nomination meets the criteria and no honorable mentions are awarded
  • Nominees will be immediately informed of the decision and the award will be presented to the winner at the annual conference.
