Our 2024 National Seminar was a great success! About 100 attendees gathered at FIT in NYC for a day of sharing and learning. We were honored to have leading sleep researchers and clinicians who provided educational content and allowed time for connecting one-on-one with attendees.

Researcher Dr. Thomas Scammell covered a lot as our keynote speaker. He explained the various types of hypersomnia disorders as well as differences and similarities of NT1, NT2, and IH. Dr. Scammell also discussed the groundbreaking research on orexin agonists that he has been engaged in. This clinical research provides promise of potential new treatments that address the source of NT1 – a deficiency of orexin in the brain.

Dr. Eric Zhou addressed the connection between sleep disorders and mental health, an important topic that does not always get the attention it deserves and can make managing treatment more challenging. It was disappointing to learn that there’s limited data related to mental health treatment for people with Narcolepsy and IH. As Dr. Zhou discussed the psychiatric comorbidities experienced by many with Narcolepsy and Idiopathic Hypersomnia, especially depression and anxiety disorder, people throughout the audience nodded in agreement.

The third speaker was Dr. Matthew Davis, who focused on diagnosing people with sleep disorders and the complexities relating to both diagnosis and treatment. He also highlighted the uniqueness of working with each patient based on their individual needs and how to balance those needs with treatment options. As a physician with extensive clinical practice experience, Dr. Davis also offered valuable tips for communicating with your primary care doctor so they’re sure to always take your sleep disorder into account.
