2024 Call for Narcolepsy Network Board Nominations

May 8th, 2024

Today, I am excited to announce an open call for nominations to the Narcolepsy Network Board of Directors. We’re looking for service-oriented leaders who:

  1. Have a desire to improve the lives of people with narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia,
  2. Want to be part of something bigger than themselves, and
  3. Have a set of skills and expertise that match our needs.

Who does Narcolepsy Network represent?
We have built a community that represents everyone. We’re here to amplify each and every one of your voices, and we synthesize them together into what we call the Collective Voice. This Collective Voice represents a diverse range of experiences: from the severity of your symptoms, to the daily issues you face, and more. Regardless of where you live, what you do, or how public you want to be—Narcolepsy Network is here for you.

What does board service look like?
Board service is a team sport, and we make informed decisions together, in partnership with our Executive Director. The needs of our community guide every decision that we make. Board members are expected to balance their personal interests with the needs of the organization.

Why are you calling for nominations?
Narcolepsy Network is a community-led organization that represents an incredibly diverse group of people. Given that, we have a responsibility to hold a transparent call for board nominations. This allows us to have a breadth of experience on our board that will benefit our community.

What are you looking for in potential board members?
We are looking for people who represent the different facets of our community, and those with experience serving on other nonprofit boards or in other rare diseases. Above all, we value teamwork and collaboration.

What skill sets are you looking for?
Right now, we’re interested in people who have backgrounds in:

  • Law
  • Clinical care or healthcare environments
  • Management or leadership in other non-profit organizations
  • Experience in industry or clinical research (Note: nominees who are unconflicted with the pharmaceutical industry that presently serves the sleep community both in their current role, and within the last 5 years)

How does the nominating process work?
When you submit your nomination, it will be reviewed by our Nominating Committee. This committee will contact and interview prospects whose skills, expertise, and values align with our mission. The Nominating Committee will put forth a slate of candidates for our membership to vote on. If nominees do not fit our current needs, we keep them on file for potential volunteer opportunities.

How do I nominate myself or someone else?
Please fill out this online form to nominate someone for board service

I can tell you from my own personal experience that serving on a board is an incredibly fulfilling experience. It feels good to give back! And if you have questions, please email me at [email protected].

Why Narcolepsy Network?
Thirty-eight years ago, the seeds for this community were planted by 11 incredible women who founded our organization. What began as an all-volunteer effort in 1986 has transformed into an organization led by experienced staff. At its core, our founder’s goal was to bring patients together for support, education, and advocacy. Along the way, something special happened: the people that we brought together formed friendships, relationships, and even other organizations together. These connections built a flourishing community that today has a large, impactful presence in the sleep space.
