Narcolepsy Network’s 24th Annual Patient Conference “River of Dreams” Flows Through Jacksonville, Florida
The 2009 Narcolepsy Network National Conference for people with narcolepsy, hypersomnia and those who care for them convened Friday, October 23, 2009 through Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Riverfront Hotel on the banks of the beautiful St. John’s River in downtown Jacksonville, Florida.
The event started with an all day Early Bird Arrival Gathering in the Hospitality Suite and Registration Check In at the Conference Office and Meeting Rooms. In the evening attendees gathered for a reception and Sing Along of popular songs with lyrics altered for the occasion to be about sleep and the narcolepsy experience in one of the conference rooms‚ The evening closed with a Night Owl Meet ‘n’ Greet back in the Hospitality Suite.
On Saturday morning the Conference got underway with a welcoming speech by NN Executive Director Dr. Eveline Honig and members of NN Board of Trustees. This was followed by a Keynote Presentation, “The Wide Spectrum of Narcolepsy” by renowned sleep disorder researcher, Professor of Neurology at Emory University School of Medicine and Director of Emory Health Care’s Program in Sleep David Rye, M.D., Ph.D. The rest of the day was spent in break out sessions on a wide and timely variety of subjects. Participants were then able to set out to various restaurants in coordinated groups for dinner. The evening concluded with a Pajama Party featuring meditative drumming, socializing and refreshments.
Sunday morning began with optional, early morning break out sessions. Juliette Faraco, Ph.D. geneticist and Senior Research Scientist at Stanford University’s Center for Narcolepsy delivered the Keynote Address, “Cutting Edge of Narcolepsy Research”.
Brunch was served and the group transitioned to the Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Ceremony. During the meeting it was announced that new Board of Trustees members Joel Maue, Mee Ng and Elizabeth (Betty) Scott, had been elected; current Board appointees Sarah DiDavide and Ramon M. Werbeach had been retained and Patricia A. Higgins, RN had been re-elected. The membership voted to adopt two amendments to the Bylaws on the nomination of Board of Trustee members and the proposal of Amendments to the Bylaws. Award honorees this year include Dr. Gila Lindsley and Dr. Emmanuel Mignot for their professional contributions; local artist Pam Sabourin for her volunteerism; and Kevin Cosgrove for public outreach.
The remainder of the afternoon was taken up with break out sessions on a variety of subjects followed by the closing ceremony.
Throughout the weekend the documentary movie “Ninety Naps a Day” (which was filmed at the 2008 Mini-conference in Albany, New York.) was screened. Works of art by and about people with narcolepsy and hypersomnia were displayed.
