Hello,
Today I went to my family doctor and she wanted me to try Pristiq instead of Effexor (Venlafaxine). I obviously want to trust her suggestion but I am so nervous about the switch. I have Narcolepsy with Cataplexy and I have been taking Xyrem along with Effexor for about 2 years. I love Xyrem, it has actually given me my life back. I am just nervous about taking Pristiq in place of the Effexor. Anyone out there taken this before? I need to know the good, the bad and the ugly. Please help...
Help....xyrem & Pristiq

I'm on pristiq. I started taking it because my doctor told me I would probably tolerate it better than other meds, since a member of my family was on effexor and it was working well. I have had little side effects, other than the usual with anti depressants (may or not be the cause of my night sweats, may or not be the cause of decreased sex drive--these side effects could be from the stimulants, or just being tired all the time). The withdrawal is excruciating, so don't forget to take it every day. I don't know why you would change from effexor to pristiq, to my knowledge they are very similar. Are you experiencing a change that calls for switching meds? I'd generally say that if you tolerated effexor well, you will probably tolerate pristiq well. I also take xyrem, and have not noticed any change or impact with the combo.

There are not any changes. But I was on the lowest dose of Effexor and she thought that going on Pristiq would help my anxiety a lot better. She also said that this medication wont effect my sex drive.... I am going to try it and see how it goes. I sometimes wish there was a magic pill to make this all go away. But on the same note, someone, somewhere has it a lot worse then I do.

I was prescribed pristiq by a psychiatrist for depression before I was diagnosed with N by my sleep-specialist-doctor. I have to warn you, it made me INCREDIBLY tired. It was intolerable.
