Narcolepsy: New Strategies for Diagnosis and Treatment airs on the Discovery Channel this Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 8 a.m. (EST) and again on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 8 a.m. (EST).
I recorded this and watched it last night. I think it was a very good representation of Narcolepsy and Cataplexy.
They featured a Sleep Specialist and a Primary Care Physician discussing the challenges of diagnosing and treating Narcolepsy with/wothout Cataplexy.
Julie Flygare (Narcolepsy Advocate) was interviewed and discussed her symptoms and diagnosis challenges. Another PWN gave her story.
I appreciated that the doctors forused on the subtleties of Cataplexy, not just the most severe and classic full body drop. They also discussed the challenges of quantifying sleepiness, emphasizing that a patient with Narcolepsy can fight sleepiness and appear just fine. So, a thorough history is essential to determine the severity of sleepiness.
They also discussed the barriers that physicians have in taking sleepiness seriously. Examples include: sleepiness is a sign of depression; sleepiness means you are not getting enough sleep; sleepiness means you are complaining; doctors fought sleepiness in residency training and learned to push on, so they may minimize a sleepy patient.
Overall, if you have the opportunity to view this, it is well worth it. If you are unable to view it, it should be available to view online in the future.

Good eye, I'll try to catch this. I'm sure it'll just piss me off with all the misconstrued info though. Pop culture continually gets Narcolepsy pretty damn wrong.

Thought there seemed a lack of 'collapsing/severe' Cataplexy, description/s and/or video/s.
They sort of chuckled and passed right by, when they could of or should have, described the actual limiting and disabling, as well as psychological, effect/s of Cataplexy.
Rather than simply, the mentioning of knee buckling alone. They went into more subtle Cataplexy which was good.
Perhaps, generally speaking, the wording could vary a bit to be more effective.
With something such as, or along the lines of, both: 'Restorative Sleep is rare with Narcolepsy' and 'Cataplexy is, Minor to Complete, Temporary Muscle Paralysis.'
The question regarding 'alternative' treatment got a weak 'massage' comparing (quack) response, from one of the Doctors.
It sort of had a DARE high school class feel to it.
Julie and Kelly did a good job, there sections were good.
Sorry if I seem bitter; I 'm stubborn (no disrespect nor offense to anyone).

They mentioned a stimulant patch--did anyone catch the name of it?

I only caught the last half hour.
They mentioned a stimulant patch--did anyone catch the name of it?
The patch they were talking about was methylphenidate. The brand name is Daytrana.
