Lets put those moments to use!
We are looking for "rewritten" songs for use at the conference this year!
What we need is for you to take regular songs, take the words out, and enter your own using words describing narcolepsy.
This is totally fun and it might be cool to see who comes up with some really good stuff!
Lets try to get as many as we can here so we can use them!
good luck!

We should post them on here?
Absolutely! We hope to have lots of material by the time of the Conference. We'll be making a songbook from all the reworked lyrics posted here to hand out on Friday night of the Conference. You don't have to br attending the conference to share your lyrics, but we hope you will be! If there, you can perform your own songs or one whose author is either not present or not willing to perform it him/herself.
This karaoke sing-along was Audrey Kindred's idea but it's very much up my alley. I've been having a blast! I've only done one verse so far to most songs but I have a very hefty list of ideas.
The more familiar the tune, the more participation you'll get! Mention the tune if it's not obvious.
I'll be brave and share one I feel is "done". (This one is totally silly. I expect one or two I'm working on will have people falling off their chairs, and not from cataplexy.) Feel free to come up with another verse or two (or a better version) for anything I post!
Narcolepsy Hokey Pokey
You put your head in and you try to take it out
You put your head in and now it’s bobbing all about
You’d do the hokey pokey but the cataplexy wins
That’s what we’re all about.
You put your right arm in and you could swear you took it out
You put your right arm in, hallucination took it out
You’d do the hokey pokey but you can’t remember how
That’s what we’re all about.
You put your whole self in and get ready to get out
You put your whole self in and then you hear a shout
We said hokey pokey but she must’ve heard “lights out”
That’s what we’re all about.

Okay, here's another...
"[Sleeping] Here, There, and Everywhere"
sung to the tune of “Here, There, and Everywhere” by The Beatles
To lead a better life I need my bed to be here...
Here, napping each day of the year
Falling asleep with a nod of my head
Or in my bed…whenever I can get there
There, thinking I don’t even care
Everyone tells me that sleep should not be
As if I don’t see it or can help that I’m drifting there
I want it everywhere and it comes on to me
Faster than I am aware
But I’d love it not to need it everywhere
Knowing that life is out there
Waiting for me to just open my eyes
And realize for once I’m not sleeping there
I want it everywhere and it comes on to me
Faster than I am aware
But I’d love it not to need it everywhere
Knowing that life is out there
Waiting for me to just open my eyes
And realize for once I’m not sleeping there
Sleeping there and everywhere
Here, there and everywhere

Narcolepsy
sung to the tune of "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond
Here in the night, something began to happen
I felt it at once, it woke me up
Must’ve been real
Then I was so sure but
Now it’s more’n I can explain
Hands, touching hands, reaching out
Grabbing me, was it you?
Nar-co-lep-sy
Dreaming never seemed so real
Please hear my plea, I can’t move or even squeal.
But Now I, I’m scared of the dark
And the hallucinations
The nightmares that come alive
And when I wake
Finally from the horror
I find it hard to return to sleep.
Hands, touching hands, reaching out
Grabbing me, déjà vu!
Nar-co-lep-sy
Dreaming never seemed so real
Please hear my plea, I can’t move or even squeal…oh no, no…
Nar-co-lep-sy
Dreaming never seemed so real

That old black nighty has me in its spell, and long black nights I don't sleep so well.
Those icy fingers up and down my spine
Are hynagogic monsters half the time
That danged vibration that I feel inside, and then the helicopter starts its ride.
And up and down I go, round and round I go, like a washer filled with Tide.
I should stay awake, but what can I do?
I scream your name and it's insane
Insane that such a mighty yell comes out so faint you can hardly tell.
The bed has become a symbol for the urn that fate had me cremated for.
And every time my eyes begin to REM, darling, up and down I go, round and round I go
In a spin, spinning to dry, wearing that old black nighty I love.
nite nite

i'd like to do a song of great social + political import...
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
Everybody!
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
That’s it!

i'd like to do a song of great social + sleep import...
Oh Lord, won’t you give me a night of good sleep?
My friends are all snuggled, warm in their sheets.
Worked hard to make it happen, all here on my own.
But Lord, won’t make me peacefully prone?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a brand new shiny brain?
Mine has been failing + leaving me only half sane.
I wait for delivery each day until ten,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me some of that orexin?
Oh Lord, won’t you give me a night of good dreams?
I’m counting on you, Lord, to get rid of the screams.
Prove that you love me and give me a break,
Oh Lord, won’t you give me a nice way to wake?
Everybody!
Oh Lord, won’t you give me a night of good sleep?
My friends are all snuggled, warm in their sheets.
Worked hard to make it happen, all here on my own.
But Lord, won’t make me peacefully prone?

Chorus:
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Verse #1
You think you lost your love,
Well, I saw her yesterday.
It's you she's thinking of
And she told me what to say.
Bridge:
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad.
Verse #2
She said you hurt her so
She almost lost her mind.
But now she said she knows
You're not the hurting kind.
Bridge:
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!
Chorus:
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
And with a love like that
You know you should be glad.
Verse #3
YOU KNOW it's up to you,
I think it's only fair,
Pride can hurt you, too,
Apologize to her

Because she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!
Chorus:
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah

IS THAT ALL THERE IS? Peggy Lee
SPOKEN:
I remember when I was a very little girl, our house caught on fire.
I'll never forget the look on my father's face as he gathered me up
in his arms and raced through the burning building out to the pavement.
I stood there shivering in my pajamas and watched the whole world go up in flames.
And when it was all over I said to myself, "Is that all there is to a fire"
SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
SPOKEN:
And when I was 12 years old, my father took me to a circus, the greatest show on earth.
There were clowns and elephants and dancing bears.
And a beautiful lady in pink tights flew high above our heads.
And so I sat there watching the marvelous spectacle.
I had the feeling that something was missing.
I don't know what, but when it was over,
I said to myself, "is that all there is to a circus?
SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
SPOKEN:
Then I fell in love, head over heels in love, with the most wonderful boy in the world.
We would take long walks by the river or just sit for hours gazing into each other's eyes.
We were so very much in love.
Then one day he went away and I thought I'd die, but I didn't,
and when I didn't I said to myself, "is that all there is to love?"
SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
SPOKEN:
I know what you must be saying to yourselves,
if that's the way she feels about it why doesn't she just end it all?
Oh, no, not me. I'm in no hurry for that final disappointment,
for I know just as well as I'm standing here talking to you,
when that final moment comes and I'm breathing my lst breath, I'll be saying to myself
SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is

NIGHT AND SLEEP
By Mort Rosenstein (and Cole Porter)
Like the beat beat beat of the REM-REM
When the heavy eyelids fall
Like the ding ding dock of the alarm clock
As it tries to make me tall
Like my auto,auto,auto behavior
When my hallucinating is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating
Wake,wake,wake
Night and sleep, I am the pwn
Only me beneath the moon or on the floor
Whether near to me, or far
Narcolepsy and cataplexy
I think of you
Day and sleep, night and sleep, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go
All my hy-po-cre-tin gone
I fall asleep in my lonely room
I think of you
Day and sleep, night snd sleep
Narcoleptic bed
Theres an oh such a scary monster dreaming inside my head
And this torment wont be through
Dexedrine, provigil, xyrem ,and you
Day and sleep, night and sleep

I attached my song earlier...but just in case some cannot open the attachment, here is my song
Music- by the Eagles- "Take it Easy"
Take It Easy- NN Style:
Well, I'm runnin round in circles
Can't remember what I'm doin'
Got a million things on my mind.
I just can't seem to focus
All feels like hocus-pocus
Some sleep is what I need to find
Take it easy,take it easy
Go find a comfy place to nap
And take it easy
Lighten up while you still can
Don't even try to understand
Just find a comfy place to nap
And take it easy.
Well I'm lyin' here, awake now
Had such a pleasant nap
that dream world still on my mind
Oh if I could stay there
I would have no cares,
But I must return to Real Time?
Come on baby
Don't say I'm lazy
You gotta know I can't help it
I'm just sleepy.
I may sleep and I may snooze
And it looks like I may lose,
But it's a gift
I tell it true
Take it easy.
Well I'm runnin' round in circles
Can't remember what I'm doin
Got a zillion things on my mind.
Lookin for a cover
Somewhere I can hover
It's so hard to find.
Take it easy, take it easy
Just find a comfy place to nap
and take it easy.
Come on baby
Don't say maybe
I gotta know when I can nap
and that will save me!
Ooooo..ooooo etc.

Nightmare Rising
I see a nightmare arising
I see trouble on the way
I dream earthquakes and lightenin'
I feel bad vibes today.
Chorus:
Don't go to sleep tonight
Well, it's bound to be a fright
There's a lurker on the rise.
I hear hurricanes ablowin'
I hope the dream is ending soon
I fear the toilets' overflowing
I hope I wake up be-fore noon.
Chorus
Hope you got your dreams together
Hipe you are quite prepared to lie
Looks like I'd better find a tether
My body is rising toward the sky
Chorus

Laura, wow! I've got some catching up to do!
Got a few goodies yet to come ... here's a couple that are actually finished!
Sharon
To the tune of Swanee River (FL’s State Song)
Way down upon the St. John’s River,
A town called Jacksonville
That’s where us Narcolepsy folks go
That’s where we hear Mignot!
All up and down the East Coast, West Coast
N’ everywhere in between
Crowne Plaza is our gracious host
A stone’s throw from St. Augustine
We’ll meet and talk for many an hour
With friends both old and new
We’ll laugh and cry and be empowered
All the weekend through.
<p>
Three Narcoleptic Mice
Three narcoleptic mice
Orexin knockout mice
See how they dream
See how they dream
In REM they ran after the farmer’s wife
She cut off their tails with a carving knife
What a relief to wake up from this plight
Three narcoleptic mice

With apologies to the late great Otis Redding and co-author Steve Cropper.
(SITTIN' ON) THE DOCK OF THE BAY
- written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper
- lyrics as recorded by Otis Redding December 7, 1967, just three
days before his death in a plane crash outside Madison, Wisconsin
- #1 for 4 weeks in 1968
Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time
I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way
So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time
Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes
Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home
Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time
The N version
Or is it the inversion? My days are pretty much upside down.
Sleepin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sleepy till the evenin' comes
Watching the dreams come in
And then I watch em' drift away again, yeah
I'm sittin' on the edge of the bed
Watching the night slip away
Ooo, I'm just sittin on the edge of my bed
Missin' sleep
I left my meds at Georgia's
headed for a drug holiday
'Cause I've been plenty weary
And look like I'm gonna stay that way
So' I'm sittin' on the edge of the bed
Watching my life slip away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the edge of my bed
Losin' time
Look like nothing's gonna change
Narcolepsey remains the same
I Can't find the doctor who know what to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes
Sittin' here resting my bones
And this E D S won't leave alone
From the kitchen I've roamed
Just to make this bed my home
Now, I'm just gonna sit on the sofa today
Watching the world roll away
Oooo-wee, sleepin' on the sofa today
Wastin' time
