To those ppl who are trying to get disability benefits: I am 43, Dx about 10 years ago, applied for and got SS Disability benefits the first time I requested it about 8 years ago. I had a very good doctor, the head of the sleep studies and lab in our area of Northeast Arkansas. The Disblty ofc requested info from him, from me and interviewed some of my friends and family. I talked to the ppl that I listed as references and made sure they were knowledgable of N and the whole spectrum of problems it caused me. I also wrote a 2 page explanation of daily problems and printed info about N from the internet and mailed it in. Then I got word that I was approved. I know my doctor told them in detail about N and that he did not expect it to improve much for me since I had been on meds for a few years and was still having major problems. I don't have other health issues, except for carpal tunnel in my wrists. I take meds for that on occasion when it flares up.

I don't know if they just didn't know enough about it to reject the disability or if they really understood the need. But either way, I got approved. Thank you Lord!!

Now my kids are teenagers and my hubby doesn't travel as much with work. They are easier to care for. So now I have been working about 2 days a week as a substitute teacher. The extra money doesn't effect my disability income as long as I don't make more than the amount allowed each month. I love working again!!! I really have to guard against gettting overly tired or stressed! I have to sleep for about 2 hours when I get home in the afternoon.

I take a stimulant med called Methylin, 20 mg xr tablet in the a.m. and up to two 5mg regular tablets of the same med. each day as needed. It does not cost much like the name brand meds like Adderall, but it is basically the same thing. My son takes it for ADD. You have to go get the Rx every month, but it is worth it.

To everyone concerned about disability and SSDI.

It's all about your medical records and what diagnosis is within them.

General Providers don't know anything about Narcolepsy. Specialists who have become educated about narcolepsy do.

If you have no real documentation, you don't get any SSDI.

Its also about how many other symptoms you have besides narcolepsy.

Cataplexy anyone? That really disables you.

Memory loss goes hand in hand with narcolepsy because you are losing a lot of your neurons.

Insomnia combined with sleep walking, sleep eating, sleep driving is also a disability.

Does your mate have to drive you around for you to get anywhere?

Do you have a disabled parking sticker?

The parking sticker goes along when you can't walk too far anywhere because of your peripheral neuropathy that goes along with your diabetes.

Narcoleptics usually get diabetes.

Yes, it is all about multiple symptomologies and pathologies.

Depression is to be added to the plethora of symptoms.

That's about it. Your medical records are important to social security.

I was just denied disability retirement from calstrs - CA teacher's retirement service. I am still going forward but in hindsight wish I had

1) applied immediately after resigning instead of waiting (long story but was so exhausted and depressed I sat/slept the time away).

The irony is that they want to see lots of treatment notes from the time of resignation on and I don't have too many. Why? the same reason I resigned. That is, the meds did not control symptoms enough to stay awake. I could no longer do my job but I also saw little need to pay out of pocket for doctors visits when I knew I had tried everything and was getting less and less bang for my buck. If you are considering disability, get your ducks in order before you resign.

2) kept track of old med records

It has been a pain chasing down records. They get sent to the bureacrats and I am not sure how far back they truly go. I will now ask that they be sent to me personally.
