Yes, a nap is refreshing for a little while. It has to be a *good* nap, though. I decided I wanted to be out away from the house more so I decided I'd just go ahead and sleep whenever the urge struck me where ever I was at the time. This has not worked out well at all. I've realized that it's really rare that I could get a refreshing nap doing that. If it's a noisy or uncomfortable place I'll just be moving in and out of micro sleeps constantly, which are not refreshing at all.
And I'm usually struggling a lot to stay awake enough to ride my bike or the bus so as to not fall and hit my head or break my wrist or something. And I usually can stay mostly awake, I just keep getting hit with very short sleep attacks over and over. My body feels incredibly weak and sometimes I do collapse partially and run my bike off the path or start to fall toward the bar on the bus, but I usually come to in time to avert disaster (same thing happened when I was driving).
Today I went downtown to meet someone but they were too ill to come out so went to the library. I had been struggling to stay awake before I left the house and by that point it had got really bad. I started to read a magazine but kept nodding off seconds at a time and found it impossible so I put it away. I tried to sleep in a chair at the library but it was uncomfortable and people were talking and rustling papers which kept jolting me awake.
A friend of mine called me and I asked him to come in the car and get me from there since I was too tired to walk home from the bus stop. I could barely walk, I kept stumbling and trying to stay awake and upright. When I got home I crashed on the couch about 30 minutes and then suddenly I was awake and felt fine. Now it's about an hour later and I'm getting sleepy again.
My question is, is this like narcolepsy (or whatever?) you experience? I watched a video of a guy with narcolepsy and he did fall all the way asleep no matter where he was and he went down and hit his head. So far I've managed to (barely) avoid that and I can't sleep but for a few seconds (over and over) in uncomfortable or noisy places, but he just went right out wherever he was. I wouldn't call those micro sleeps sleeping?? I'm essentially awake and it's not refreshing like lying on my couch and taking a 10-30 min nap.

Have you been tested? If not you should because there are medications that can help even if all you get is a little relief some is better then nothing.
I am like you I sleep terrible, my naps are seconds to a couple of mins at a time. I can't always fall asleep even though I'm always tired. I tell people I am the worst Narcoleptic in the world because mine doesn't follow the rules. I have done a lot of reading and N and one thing I have found out is everyones syptoms are different except that we are all TIRED.
At night I fall asleep well but I don't stay asleep or like this morning I can actually sleep in but I woke up at 5, then 6:30 and I finally got up at 7:20. Now by just read the general N discription I would say I don't have it, but with all of the reading I have done I've found out that Narcolepsy messes up your sleep patterns, so no not everyone falls asleep in the middle of a conversation and not everyone sleep all of the time. I get much less sleep then most people I know.
My MTSL showed I fell asleep during all 5 naps at a lactency avg of 5 mins and I went into rem 4 out of 5 within 3 mins, one time I fell into rem in 0.5 seconds. Now I don't agree that I am that tired all of the time, but it's not normal. I have days that are worse then others, lately the weekends are worse and I think because my body schedule is off. They say you should go to bed and get up the same time everyday and take at least one 20 min nap. Going to bed the same time is tough but during the week I go around the same time.
Anyway get tested and get some help. I'm on Adderall and it only helps a little but that little is better then nothing.
