I was watching the Today Show this morning and Dr. Nancy Snyderman did a segment on the effects of sleep deprivation. She was describing the four most common sleep disorders, she referred to Narcolepsy as "the sexy one where people sort of stop what they're doing, seem to fall asleep, and then go on with their normal daily lives". I am angered about the mischaracterization of Narcolepsy and how she minimized the seriousness of the disease. I would have rather her not mention it at all rather than perpetuate ignorance.

"Go ON WITH Normal daily life???" I'm so mad! Here's what else got to me ---
She goes on to talk about how our face changes when we don't get enough sleep. She was in a 36 hr. study and said "what was most stunning to me"---when she lost sleep, "my eyes got sunken, every wrinkle showed up, I looked sallow, my face lost color sunken eyes..." But she claimed to "feel fine". Pictures are the proof (shown in video that things AREN'T FINE)

I'm writing to the Today's Show using this link:

Tell her what you think if you have a facebook account. We try so hard to be taken seriously and not be embarrassed by this cruel disorder. A professional should not add to the stigma!!!

I used part of your note in my response, I hope you do not mind. This is what I sent to the Today's show.

Today's daily dose:

I was very upset, about Dr. Peterman's comment on the show. Narcolepsy suffers do not have "normal daily lifes". We live each day with sleep deprivation. She later discusses the effects from of lack of sleep -- we suffer from this daily. It effects our relationships, memory, energy level, and our jobs! There is NOTHING SEXY about it. Also she is contributing to the stigma of Narcolepsy. It is a disease and it is NOT SEXY and we just "Don't go on with our daily lifes" Can you pass this message on to her please???
