Years ago, when I worked at a Quaker lobbying group in Washington, DC, one of the employees had arranged to bring a treadmill into his office. He purchased a desk/table which was at the right height for him to type while walking slowly on the treadmill. He got rid of his chair. He had a job in which he spent most of his workday typing on the computer. When I asked him why he had done this, he said that he appreciated the opportunity to stay in shape while walking at a pace of about 1.5 miles per hour, 7-8 hours per day.

When I realized that it is much easier for me to stay awake while walking instead of sitting, I wondered whether this treadmill solution might allow me to go back to working the types of jobs I've had in the past, in which I worked at a computer all day.

I just Googled "Treadmill Desk," and there are all sorts of links out there.

If anyone tries this before I do, would you let me know whether it helps you to stay awake?

Cheers everybody,

Saraiah

Speakingfor myself, would not try it, I would still go into automatic behavior likely, making the tread mill more dangerous than not....

Same here. I already doze off at the gym, can't imagine tripping flat on my face at work. I totally recommend using a balance ball instead of a regular chair. You naturally work your abs and after awhile it becomes second nature. It also really helps against slouching and lower back pain. Several people at my office choose the ball over the chair. I would only recommend it to offices that don't have outside visitors.
