I take provigil during the day to stay awake and seroquel to sleep at night, but in my experience they sort of cancel each other out. I'm tired all the time, motoring around on provigil, but I can't think straight. Then, my nighttime sleep is unrefreshing and I don't dream anymore. Is this a normal drug combination for treating narcolepsy? I don't want to end up an example for the medical community of What Not to Do. I'm having a great deal of trouble working.

Thank you.

The most accepted treatment combination for Narcolepsy is Provigil during the day, Xyrem at night.

Now this does not by any means indicate that Provigil/Xyrem is a one-size-fits-all solution, since every person with Narcolepsy experiences it differently.

This is, however, considered to be the most current treatment regimen.

If you can't think straight during the day, it could be an indication that your nighttime sleep still isn't refreshing. Sleep disruptions can manifest themselves in ADD-like symptoms.

When I was on Provigil during the day without Xyrem, I wasn't getting good nighttime sleep so I was having breakthrough sleepiness during the day. I was taking Ritalin on top of the Provigil for those "low" times. Now that I am on Xyrem at night, I wake up feeling refreshed and no longer need the Ritalin (but I still need the Provigil).

Is there a reason you're on Seroquel instead of Xyrem? (If you are a single parent of a very small child, Xyrem might not be indicated because you sleep so soundly that you might not fully wake in an emergency. Likewise, if you are on a sodium-restricted diet, Xyrem might not be right for you.)

Oh that is what they did for me. I hated it. It was a disaster. I felt like my mind was numb. I never ate, my motor skills were blah. My life was in slow motion but my mind was racing. It ruined so many parts of me. I used to be an excellent artist. I actually got work occasionally doing portraits. After the drugs, I think that part of me is just permantly shut down. I was on several combinations of diffrent drugs but that combo was my LAST. I went drug free after that. I just missed myself to much. And everyone else missed me too.

Seroquel is a mood stabilizer which does have long acting sedating effects.  I don't think that it is appropriately prescribed as a sleeping pill.  I would definitely discuss this with your doctor.
