I recently had a sleep study which ruled out apnea. I was noted to have periodic leg movements during the study that were associated with arousal. The following day I had an MSLT that consisted of 5 - 20 minute naps. My results per the dr. were "significantly abnormal" and I experienced REM in all 5 naps. I was told that I have narcolepsy with cataplexy.

I've been on FMLA since the end of April related to depression (for 5+ years) and now they think possible bipolar. I've argued that for years I was not depressed that something else was wrong with me. Hopefully now I can begin to "get better".

I am already on Lamictal, originally put on it because of possible bi-polar. Then I had a "seizure" which was later ruled cataplexy. The neurologist agreed with the psych about the lamictal so at least they are on the same page.

Now what happens?? I see the dr (a pulmonologist, neurology passed me on since they ruled out epilepsy) next week to discuss/begin treatment. What can I expect? Do the meds take long to help?

I'm a CPA (certified public accountant) that works for a hospital. I also have a 45 minute commute 1-way each day. I know that when I drive that distance, I can be a danger to myself and others. What can I do about my job? What are your experiences discussing your condition with your employer and asking for accomodations? Can I really do my job and do it well?

Thanks for your input!
