Ok, so it's not so much of a problem as much as the reason for some of your frustrations. I see people often complaining that their meds work some days and not others. Here's the secret I learned from the "Sleep Bible" (The Principals of Sleep Medicine-a massive book, 130+ chapters, great reading...yeah...):

Stimulants work better when you are tired, amphetamines in particular (i.e. unsure about modafinil)

That means, if you are near awake, there will be less of a positive effect for you, but if you are dragging, you will get much more out of the medication.

Think about it this way:
During the day you turn on a light and there is little difference in brightness. Turn on that same light at night and it seems brighter than when it was on during the day, even with the sunlight. (I actually want to test if it is indeed brighter, I think it just might be tongue.gif)

Now if adjusting the dose by alertness can compensate, I do not know.

I hope that can explain some of your frustrations!
