 I was going to wait until I could write the whole long story but I just don't have the energy to do so. My Dr. diagnosed me with ME-CFS and Narcolepsy in the fall of 2005. I learned the coping skills with ME-CFS but getting the hang of this dang Narcolepsy is very depressing. He and another Dr. have tried me on Provigil (which about put me in my grave) Dextrostat, and now I'm on Aderrall and I had to lower that because at the info from here and confirmation and agreement of my Pharmacist the Aderall is mixing with one of the antidepressants I'm on and it is very low (25mg) and that I should see my Drs. Ugh! More blood work, more Drs. visits! Since 2005 we haven't yet found anything that will keep me awake consistently, meaning that after 30 days I start sleeping OVER the medication! Mentally I have been so happy but now I'm really down and I want desperately to cope with this better! If anyone can please help...Thanks so very much--Beauty

Hi Beauty!
Welcome to the boards! Happy Valentines day!!!!!
The Narcolepsy can be a drag, and the depression that can come with can seem overwhelming at times. There are tools that can help, as long as you keep looking for them. Like the medications, what works for one person won't do any good for another.
Trying to be social can help. Avoid being a hermit, and staying to yourself. When you keep the world from you, a sort of downward spiral can happen...
That downward spiral is POWERFUL...so avoid it. When out and around other people, consume who they are. LISTEN to what is going on in the lives of others...It can distract from the pain, AND make you the best friend anyone could ever ask for.
Try using the power of the downward spiral in the opposite. THIS works! Spend 5-10 minutes with your eyes closed imagining a perfect day...Imagine the details...what you would wear...what you would do...where you would live...who you would meet....Put in your mind the best possible day with NO limits (time, money, illness...). Get that into your mind and ENJOY IT!
Then through out the day, think about it, and use it as a map to get you where you want to be. It's likely you will feel yourself moving towards your perfect day! I know it may sound like mumbojumbo BS, but it works. Even the knowledge that you are moving towards a positive situation will bring you to a place where depression can't touch you.
I hope you can use this tool to help you!
Have a great day!!!!!!

Hello Beauty, Its nice to meet you
.
I always try to look at the bright side of everything (and yes my husband thinks I'm nuts a times
), so this is my advice for you. Look at each day as an adventure, one that you have chosen to make so the lives of the next generation are better. If you go through this tough time now the next set of people dx with N might have a better answer on treatment.
greatbig47 is right about not allowing yourself to become a hermit crab. I wish I had that wisdom 5 years ago, I'm sure it would have helped my husband. The climb out of the "crab shell" is very hard.
please remember we are all here to support you whenever you need it.
Take care.

Hi to all!
I just decided to visit and see what was going on!! Is it possible for someone to have seizure disorder rather than cataplexy with narcolepsy?
I've been having these "spells" but only in the early am. We just went to my MD for a follow up, the Pharmacist thought it might be the dose of Aderall, however, I also have ME-CFS which can cause seizure disorder. My "spells" have not been extremely bad but a bit disconcerting. Like, I wake up and go to the bathroom and then lay down and my entire body starts jerking? I read on the internet that seizures can happen anytime of the day, only at night, or only during the day or both? I also read that you can know completely what's going on. The only sign that I have that one is coming is severe itching all over? Since my Dr. didn't like the "rebound" from Tablett Aderall he switched me to Aderall XR. Of course I slept all morning yesterday and today (until 12 pm EST!). He decided it was time for me to be retested for Lyme disease and to be tested for the first time for Heavy Metals in my liver? (as these diseases are relalted to ME-CFS). He is a great Doc! I'm very blessed in that regard! Let me know what you think. This morning at 5 am I had my 4th "spell", it lasted no longer than 10 minutes and I was conscious the whole time?
